Day 1
WELCOME TO HAWAI'I
We begin our journey with a PIKAI CLEANSE. This is a Hawaiian ceremony customary to ward off any imbalanced energies that are lingering on ourselves. This cleanse will entail prayer, protocol, and intention-setting where we cleanse the energies while in the ocean. Participants will have to submerge their bodies (shallow water) into the ocean.
Next, you’ll go through HAWAI’I ORIENTATION. Kumu Elijah will walk us through an orientation of PLACE–where you are and a short summary of the history of the Hawaiian islands, LANGUAGE–in Hawai’i we switch between 3 different languages and you will be notified of each, and WHO WE ARE–the participants get to know each other and the purpose for this retreat.
Day 2
MAN AS GUIDER
We begin our journey with OPENING CIRCLE + OLI where we are guided through an oli (chant) that we will be using throughout our stay and acknowledge the akua (the Gods). Within circle we will do our TI LEAF LEIS. Leis are a Polynesian weaving exercise. Participants will weave in good mana (energy) into a lei (garland) as protection for the journey. Ti leaf is medicinal and a lei is normally offered as a gift or gratitude to the land. We will be using this for where we are going and who we will be meeting.
Then, we head to our first activity connecting with nature in ‘AINA EXPLORATION & PRACTICE and going on a HIKE for an exploration of the island flora & fauna and the delicate nature of the plant species of the Hawaiian islands. Here we will discuss our total energy system focusing on Ku & Kina Energies. Our goal is to have men understand Indigenous ways of understanding the masculine and feminine roles within themselves as well as all living things.
Next we meet a kumu (teacher) who embodies both roles within themselves as MAHU where we learn from her how to hold both energies.
We complete the day in ‘AWA CEREMONY. In ancient times, ‘awa ceremonies have been implemented to build relationship between neighboring chiefs and to create diplomacy and reconciliation. Today, ‘awa is viewed as sacred plant medicine. It has been shown to reduce anxiety, stress, and expand spiritual awareness when used in ceremonial ways.
Day 3
MAN AS PROVIDER
In this in depth journey, we will explore the indigenous view of land and man relationship and the responsibility of stewardship over the land for future generations. We will spend the entire day inside of the LO'I (taro field) where we will put in work cultivating the kalo (taro) to embody the indigenous ways that men have provided for their families in Hawai’i. This practice will start by harvesting taro in the patch, preparing the food, pounding the food into nourishment, and preparing other foods for a feast as one family.
Today’s workshop is BECOMING THE CHIEF OF YOUR VILLAGE where we discuss from the Hawaiian perspective what it was to be a chief and the principles they stand on. We do this while learning HAWAIIAN FOOD SYSTEMS. We will explore the childhood concept and looking for our assets that we can build upon as well as our liabilities that we need to improve to become a wholesome chief for our families.
This experience will include a full WATERFALL cleanse to immerse our men into the energies of life giving water.
Day 4
MAN AS WARRIOR
We begin the day with an ancient Polynesian warrior dance HA’AKOA. Then we do our workshop of the day on UNLOCKING OUR INNER WARRIOR. This will give men a chance to channel their inner warrior and embody the energy they want to live at.
Next we head to PEARL HARBOR with a Hawaiian veteran and learn about the MILITARY OCCUPATION OF THE HAWAIIAN ISLANDS & the negative effects it has on the Hawaiian people and their lifeways.
We end the day playing a non-violent FLAGS GAME. Two teams will be summoned and will present their ha’akoa as a dual to their opposing team to spike energy and bring through the KU MANA. This is a non-violent yet combative contact game to bring out the inner warrior, courage, and valor in the men to uphold their mana and aim for the teams to win.
Day 5
MAN AS HEALER
Start off the day with MEDITATION IN THE ‘AINA.
Next we have our HO’OPONOPONO CIRCLE. In this exercise, we revisit our family tree and our support system. Through this intentional exercise with the ‘UPENA (fish net) concept, or men will explore where they are with their support systems. In this practice, our men will discover the level of connection they have to their families, friends, and acquaintances, while identifying the relationships that no longer serve them.
We end in FIRE CEREMONY where we release our anger and pain into the fire. We are ushered into a letter writing circle where we open up on our feelings of hurt, abandonment, rejection, and pain. Then we go through the process of forgiving and letting go.
This ceremony is meant to speak, cry, and let our pain out as we are welcomed into the circle of life.
Day 6
MAN AS ECONOMIC LEADER
Today is our business and leadership day where we discuss how to build up our communities economically. We will visit the NATION OF HAWAI’I who are a collective that have declared sovereignty and are making their own currency, and creating treaties with various nations as an independent nation.
Day 7
CLOSING CEREMONY
We end our trip with a gratitude circle where we will go deep into the hearts of our men and allow them once again to unravel and give thanks for the beautiful time they shared with one another.
Here will give thanks to the land, ancestors, and spirits for the guidance and love. As we wind down to head home.

Elijah Kala McShane is a kanaka oiwi o Hawai’i (native descendant of the Hawaiian islands) and direct descendant of both awai’i/Maui & O’ahu chiefly lineages. Elijah, also known as Kahu Kala, is the founder of Awakened Aloha, an organization focused on “inspiring a world where aloha is the heartbeat of humanity.” Awakened Aloha’s work bridges communities through ancient wisdom, cultural values and ancestral connection through modalities of modern wellness. Through ceremony, spiritual facilitation, aloha education, and community development, Awakened Aloha strives to help co-create a world grounded in aloha.
His work has inspired hearts in the educational, political, and spiritual sectors of modern Hawai’i to visioneer a future that promotes harmony for all people beginning with Hawai’i and her children. As an ambassador of aloha and messenger of lokahi (unity/harmony), Elijah shares a universal message that lays at the foundation of all people and cultures, “aloha ‘aina, aloha akua, aloha kanaka” (a deep honor and reverence for the land, Spirit(s), and the people). May this message of truth reach all corners of the earth and call forth unity for all cultures and people. In the Spirit of ‘I’O. E ola mau.
