JOIN THE EDUCATIONAL TRAVEL EXPERIENCE
Where local experts are your professors and the destination is your classroom.
Embrace nuance and challenge everything you thought you knew.
Reroot is a decentralized university, designing custom curriculums for nonprofits, organizations, and universities. Each onsite class challenges the limitations of a traditional university setting, where textbooks are written 1) in a different language and 2) by authors that are not part of the native population.
All Reroot lessons are taught by local academic experts, where multiple perspectives, shared space, and a lived environment provide non-tangible information never replicated in a traditional classroom setting.
The result? Students learn straight from the source, fostering a healthy, mutually-beneficial learning environment for both professor and student.
Design your own custom course catalog, taught by local experts:
HISTORY
History lessons are filled with millions of perspectives—yet, the version that matters is the one told by the native population. Each straight-from-the-source Reroot class is told directly from those still living in the lands directly impacted by their history, not someone from another culture or diaspora interrupting their stories.
food
Harvest your own food in Hawaiian taro fields while learning about conservation and ancient agricultural practices, taste ancestral meals cooked in earthen ovens in El Salvador with a Nahuat chef, or ride horseback through Cuban farms and eat directly with farmers as they explain how they access food in a blockaded country.
ART
If you want to learn about dead artists, visit a museum. With Reroot, students visit the homes of political cartoonists, experience private concerts with AfroCuban musicians, and take pottery class in the homes of Indigenous artists..
ECONOMICS
Reroot invites and encourages critical thought from all students. How do Native Hawaiians survive when developers drain local watersheds to build resorts? How do Cubans access medicines and life-saving machines with an international blockade? Why would an agricultural based society like El Salvador switch to Bitcoin as an official currency?
Join the educational exchange that cannot be duplicated in a digital space.
Below, we highlight a select few immersive curriculums Reroot designed for nonprofits, organizations, and universities. To learn more about our custom travel experiences, please contact us directly.
Learn stories your textbooks never taught you—straight from native people.
In partnership with the SMU University Human Rights Program, Reroot implemented a 10-day program on the revitalization and demilitarization of Hawaii. Students discovered how the islands became occupied by the U.S. military, leading to the human trafficking, petroleum lead poisoning, and radiation exposure of Native Hawaiians. Visitors learned about since-destroyed sacred lands, where native Hawaiians gave offerings to their ancestors.
Uncover the value of land stewarding in overtouristed areas.
Reroot curated an intercultural exchange between native Hawaiian students and predominantly Black and Latino students from Frederick Douglass Academy IV High School. Students experienced cultural classes and performances from other students, learned about land stewardship and the dangers of over tourism in frequented spots like Diamond Head and Waikiki Beach. Visitors learned how former burial sites and watersheds were transformed into resorts and military bases, damaging agriculture in the region.
Experience living, breathing cultures through local artists and musicians.
Lifestraw, a brand building water filtration and purification devices, hired Reroot to shoot a product commercial. Reroot organized an immersive travel experience to Cuba for Lifestraw employees, featuring local artists, dancers, and musicians. The commercial featured LGBTQ+ AfroCuban performers (both in front of and behind the camera) and many Lifestraw employees left the tour in tears.
Calling all open-minded collaborators.
Reroot partners with 75+ academic and community experts throughout El Salvador, Cuba, and Hawai'i. Our team welcomes professors across the globe to pitch their own sessions as long as they:
EMBRACE NUANCE
Stay open, and challenge long-held beliefs and propaganda. Reroot partners with academic and community experts who strongly present their perspectives, while holding space that other perspectives exist.
TRANSFER ENERGY
To travel is to immerse yourself in a living, breathing space, while learning stories that are sacred and vulnerable. Reroot abstains from digital lessons as there’s no mutual exchange between teacher and traveler.
APPLY CRITICAL THOUGHT
Question the material, offer input, and share your personal stories throughout the experience. No two Reroot trips are the same because no two travel groups are the same.
