Your El Salvador itinerary
Did you know?
There are only three remaining Indigenous communities surviving in El Salvador—the Nahuat Pipiles, the Lenca, and the Cacaopera Peoples—none of which were recognized by the government until 2014.
Day 1
Welcome + Who Are Salvadorans?
Being Salvadoran doesn’t have one specific “look,” as the population encompasses many ethnic groups. An anthropologist walks you through the PEOPLE OF EL SALVADOR, from its indigenous ancestry, Spanish colonization, Asian and African forced labor migrations, and Arab settlements—and how each group defines what it means to be Salvadoran.
Did you know?
There are only 200 Nahuat speakers still alive—today, you hear their life stories.
Day 2
Meet the Nahuat Pipiles of El Salvador
Welcome to the homes of some of the last remaining Nahuatblantes. Nahuat is the indigenous language of El Salvador and your Nahuat-speaking professors will share their various projects forged to preserve their language.
You’ll hear their first-hand accounts of the massacres they survived and the discrimination they faced.
Finish the day enjoying a boat ride on the turquoise waters of Lake Coatepeque, before dining on pupusas made fresh off the grill at our favorite pupuseria.
Did you know?
El Salvador was the first country in the world to officially adopt cryptocurrency.
Day 3
Surfing, Violence Prevention, and Cryptocurrency
El Salvador is an international surfing destination. Dive into the surf history before learning to SURF from champion surfers and local legends.
Next uncover how El Salvador went from having the highest homicide rate per capita in the world to being the safest country in Latin America in our VIOLENCE PREVENTION class. You’ll learn from community organizers on how their youth-led projects transformed their gang saturated neighborhoods for the better.
Your final lesson is on CRYPTOCURRENCY. Meet with an economist on why Bitcoin was adopted as a legal tender, the problem it aimed to solve, El Salvador’s roll-out plan, and potential consequences of the new currency.
What other Reroot travelers are saying:
Did you know?
The Salvadoran government and U.S. Embassy denied the existence of the Mozote Massacre, calling them “gross exaggerations.” First-hand testimonies from survivors (one of which you’ll meet in person) led to the United Nations Commission on the Truth for El Salvador, conducted after the war.
Day 4
Understanding the Salvadoran Civil War
Today’s lessons are often cited as favorites by past Reroot travelers—and the most important.
The El Salvador Civil War encompassed a brutal, twelve-year battle funded by the United States where the Salvadoran government actively murdered their people. Hear the personal story of a revolutionary fighter about how farmers with no military training developed a military strategy that won the war.
Next, you’ll head to the site of the Mozote Massacre, the largest massacre in Latin America. Hear directly from one of the few remaining survivors.
You’ll finish the day enjoying breathtaking views of lush mountains where you’ll meet with a holistic healer who teaches about indigo and other natural dyes (a top export in El Salvador), honey, and a special corn drink rumored to cast out spirits.
Day 5
Glamping and Lencan Legends
Your lesson taught by a Taiwanese-Lencan conservationist takes place atop the Conchagua volcano. He explains his encounter with a LENCAN GODDESS and the motivation behind his conservation efforts.
You’ll finish the day GLAMPING atop the volcano, waking up to the most beautiful sunrise overlooking the oceanic views from above the clouds.
